Our SMART Sustainability Plan

Building lasting healthcare through tourism and community partnerships

Florence Mubonehe Memorial Health Centre – Lake Bunyonyi, Rubanda District

At Florence Mubonehe Memorial Health Centre, we believe in a sustainable future built on local innovation, strategic partnerships, and purposeful tourism. While we appreciate individual support, community contributions, and occasional donations, we understand that long-term sustainability requires a smart and self-reliant approach. That is why we have developed a SMART Sustainability Plan grounded in our unique location, resources, and the growing demand for meaningful tourism experiences in Uganda.

Strategic Location for Tourism

Our health centre is located at the heart of one of Uganda's most scenic and accessible destinations—Lake Bunyonyi, a magnet for both local and international tourists:

  • Only 1.5 hours from Kigali, Rwanda, making it a perfect weekend getaway for regional tourists.
  • Just 1 hour to Ruhija, a key access point for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
  • 2.5 hours from the Virunga Volcanoes for mountaineering, gorilla, and golden monkey tracking.
  • Close to Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake Mburo National Park, and Kibale National Park—all world-renowned for their biodiversity and wildlife experiences.

This proximity to Uganda's top tourism circuits presents a viable economic opportunity to complement and sustain our health services.

Tourism & Cultural Integration

Lake Bunyonyi is not only breathtaking—it is culturally rich:

  • Home to the indigenous Batwa community, one of the last forest peoples in Uganda.
  • Deeply rooted in the history, traditions, and legends of the Kiga people.
  • A site of religious, political, and educational heritage, offering stories and sites that fascinate visitors and researchers alike.

We see this cultural wealth as a foundation for offering authentic, responsible tourism experiences.

Tour Packages for a Cause

To tap into this potential, we have developed guided tour packages for both domestic and international travelers. These experiences include:

  • Gorilla tracking
  • Community walks
  • Cultural encounters
  • Nature tours to nearby parks and attractions
  • Storytelling with elders
  • Boat rides and scenic hikes
  • Tour of Kigali City
  • Volcano hiking
  • Educational tours for institutions

Each tour directly supports the operations of the health centre, creating a win-win model where tourism fuels better health outcomes.

Our local partners—tour companies and accommodation providers around Lake Bunyonyi—play a vital role in this initiative. These partners are not only experts at designing tailor-made travel experiences; they also execute them with professionalism and integrity. Their licensed, skilled personnel share in our vision of service, ensuring that even their business operations contribute to the greater good. Together, we are building a tourism model that heals, uplifts, and empowers.

Camping Ground & Guest House

We have also established an eco-friendly campsite on the health centre grounds, right on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi:

  • Equipped with clean, modern washrooms, showers, and a lakefront dock.
  • Open to self-campers or those who prefer to rent tents and gear.
  • Offers stunning views, tranquility, and safety for tourists and backpackers.

The guest house serves volunteers, medical staff, and visiting travelers. It features:

  • Comfortable rooms
  • Self-catering options or full-service meals from a resident chef
  • Flexible booking for short or extended stays

A Model for Social Enterprise

We envision Florence Mubonehe Memorial Health Centre as more than a medical facility. It is a community-driven, socially conscious enterprise that leverages tourism and hospitality to:

  • • Generate sustainable income
  • • Provide consistent healthcare services
  • • Empower local employment and skills development
  • • Reduce dependence on external donations

This integrated model ensures that every guest, camper, or tourist contributes to saving lives, supporting maternal and child health, and uplifting the people of Rubanda District.

Our SMART sustainability plan— rooted in our Strengths, driven by Meaningful tourism, Aligned with community needs, Realistic in execution, and Transformative in impact.

Welcome to a place where healthcare meets heritage, and where every visit becomes a contribution to life and dignity.
