Bunyonyi came as a result of volcanic eruption that blocked the flowing river (Ruvuma) from the hilly swamps. The magma that dropped at Heisesero could not let the river continue and hence there was a backdrop until water was retained to form Lake Bunyonyi. There after it reached a reach a level to flow again hence the formation of Lake Bunyonyi. On a clear day, it is a spectacular sight to see the 3 of volcanic ranges just behind the lake.
Mgahinga National Park is only 76km away from Bunyonyi. For 2 hours and 30minutes drive, one can do a day tour to Kisoro for the most spectacular views or book a tour for Mountain Gorillas tracking, golden monkey tracking, birding, nature walk or hiking.
